If there is one superstar in Telugu cinema who often moonlights as a movie connoisseur, it is Mahesh Babu. Whenever he sees a film and likes it, he never fails to share his praise on social media. Now, amidst the pre-production work of his next with SS Rajamouli, Mahesh Babu has spent 80 minutes watching the Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale.
Choosing emojis over words to express his thoughts, Mahesh Babu shared a poster of the documentary and embellished it with three heart emojis. Incidentally, both these superstars haven’t worked in a film together. However, this has helped create goodwill for Nayanthara and team because not all has been hunky dory in the run-up to the release of the documentary. In response, Nayanthara shared Mahesh Babu’s praise, and said, “Thank you so much, glad you liked it.”
Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale was released on the occasion of the actor’s 40th birthday, and it was mired in controversy for more than one reason. It all started with a 3-page letter shared by Nayanthara on social media taking on Dhanush’s decision to not allow them to use footage from the film, Naanum Rowdy Dhaan (2015). The film, which was backed by Dhanush, was the maiden collaboration between Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan, who fell in love during the making of the film. Dhanush’s decision to not give a No Objection Certificate for the usage of some BTS stills and music didn’t go down well with Nayanthara, and the letter created quite a furore.
Another starry entry into the list of people who threw their weight behind Nayanthara’s documentary was actor Janhvi Kapoor, who wrote, “Nothing more inspiring that watching a strong woman be a strong woman.” Expressing her gratitude for the response, Nayanthara replied, “Dear Janhvi, the texts you sent me after watching the documentary made me extremely emotional. Am so glad that you took time to pour out what you felt. Really means a lot. lots of love to you, baby.”
Despite netizens taking sides, and Nayanthara facing incessant and insensitive trolling for the same, the response to the documentary has been pretty decent. Many have found the documentary to be a rare glimpse into the cinema journey of Nayanthara. There have also been negative criticisms about the documentary for a variety of reasons, including the staginess of the wedding. Nevertheless, the documentary continues to be a talking point on social media, and Mahesh Babu’s appreciation for the same might just be a shot in the arm for team Nayanthara.
On the work front, Nayanthara has an interesting lineup of releases, including Raakayie, Mannaangatti Since 1960, and Hi.
