S S Rajamouli’s magnum opus, the two Baahubali films, are finally being combined for a single, cogent release through the much-anticipated Baahubali: The Epic cut. The team put out a second trailer for the upcoming release version. Widely considered the inflection point in Indian cinema’s market capabilities and mythological storytelling convictions, the two blockbusters casually invented the phenomenon of the ‘Pan Indian blockbuster’. The newly released trailer perfectly captures the scale and scope of these films and how S S Rajamouli’s vision remains ageless.
Baahubali’s growth from naive young man to the stately royal prince is charted in the course of the trailer, falling under 3 minutes. The caption in the trailer read, ‘Remastered, Recut.” The new version is also available in IMAX, 4DX, and regular screen ratios.
The trailer begins with a wide shot of the Mahishmati kingdom, only to cut to montages of fight scenes and Baahubali engaged in war. The crisp action is intercut with a clueless Baahubali asking Katappa about his lineage and why everyone reveres him. Then the trailer slowly shifts gears to the main storyline involving both Amarendra Baahubali and Ballaldevan as heirs to a single throne, with Ramya Krishnan’s voice-over narration filling in the details. The trailer slows down to get us speed with the events that transpired after Mahendra Baahubali went missing.
Nassar’s Bijjaladeva poses the question to the frame, “How can a dead man come back alive?” The trailer then moves onto its high point with MM Keeravani’s “Saahore Baahubali” track playing in the background, with the war sequences and action taking over till the end credits. The expanse, scale, and scope feel enhanced and bigger than ever.
The new trailer includes newly color-corrected footage, sound mixed and remastered for theatrical release. The second trailer features exquisite imagery from both films. Producer Shobu Yarlagadda confirmed, “We are trimming many scenes and songs from the films to make the length come under 4 hours. The Baahubali: The Epic cut will also feature some surprises that the audience are not expecting at all.” The franchise that broke all box office records, Baahubali, marked the first time that regional content made in one part of the country truly travelled around the world and resonated with even viewers not familiar with Indian cinema in general.
Director Rajamouli and composer M M Keeravani have personally guided the recutting process over the last few months. The team is planning a widespread release across international centers and also throughout the country. Baahubali: The Epic has a whopping runtime of 3 hours and 40 minutes. The film will be released in theaters on October 31.
