Bollywood’s Shahenshah Amitabh Bachchan presented the ANR National Award to Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi at a grand ceremony in Hyderabad on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, Bachchan remarked that he could now call himself a “member of the Telugu film industry.” He also paid tribute to legendary Telugu actor-producer Akkineni Nageswara Rao (1923-2014), in whose honour the ANR National Award was instituted by the Akkineni International Foundation, and commended his successors for upholding his legacy.

“I want to express my gratitude to Nag (Nageswara Rao’s son and actor Nagarjuna Akkineni), the foundation, and the entire family for bringing to life a colossus that we have had the privilege to observe on this earth of Telugu cinema and indeed the entire film industry. He has given us so much happiness, joy, entertainment, and culture. It is very difficult for anyone to stand here and match his (ANR’s) contribution to Indian cinema,” he said.

Lauding Nagarjuna and his family for living up to ANR’s legacy, Amitabh Bachchan shared a few lines from a poem written by his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan. “In it, he speaks of how his friends tell him he must write a will stating what he plans to leave for his sons, as nowadays a son often needs to go to court to prove he is his father’s son.”

“My father then says, ‘I haven’t been able to leave any material wealth—no money or anything for my sons. I write poetry. I have written some words, and these manuscripts are what I have. I hope they will be looked after with respect. But the line from it that I wish to share with you today is, ‘Mere bete, bete hone se mere uttaradhikari nahi honge. Jo mere uttaradhikari honge, woh mere bete honge‘ (My sons, just because you are my sons does not mean you will be my inheritors. Those who are my inheritors will be my sons).’ Nag, you and your family have proven that you are the true inheritors of this great personality,” he added.

Amitabh Bachchan also expressed his deep affection for his “dear friend” Chiranjeevi. “He has been such a dear friend; whenever I ask him for anything, he’s always there. Thank you, Chiranjeevi garu, for all you have done for me, including giving me a part in your film Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy. Thanks to Nagarjuna as well for giving me a part in your film Manam. And thanks to director Nag Ashwin and Vyjayanthi Movies (for Kalki 2898 AD), I can now proudly say that I am a member of the Telugu film industry,” he concluded, amidst thunderous applause and cheers.
