‘India Kareena Kapoor ki sunta hai’: Aman Gupta stabs himself in the heart as Vineeta Singh explains importance of celebrity brand ambassadors on Shark Tank India

A husband-wife duo pitched their tasteless supplements brand, Good Monk, on the latest episode of Shark Tank India. They claimed that their product, unlike those manufactured by competitors, doesn’t have a distinct taste. To prove their claim, they presented the panel of ‘sharks’ with two plates of the same dish, one with the supplement added and the other without. They asked the ‘sharks’ to do a taste test, and guess which plate is the one with added supplements. None of the ‘sharks’ were able to correctly guess which dish contained the supplements, leaving the founders smiling. They asked for Rs 1 crore in investment in exchange of 1.67% equity, valuing the company at Rs 60 crore.

They told the ‘sharks’ that they have raised over Rs 12 crore in funding so far, but are burning around Rs 45 lakh per month. The ‘sharks’ were shocked to learn that they are spending 85% of their money on marketing, and have lost a total of Rs 11 crore so far. The founders came with experience in the field, and said that they eventually want to split sales between their website and physical stores. But the ‘sharks’ weren’t convinced. Kunal Bahl backed out, and somewhat unusually, didn’t provide any feedback. He just told the founders to focus.

Ritesh Agarwal and Azhar Iqubal also backed out, but Vineeta Singh said that she could make them a ‘conditional offer’. She told the founders that instead of raising crores in capital, they should have hired a celebrity brand ambassador and got them to do the marketing on their behalf. Citing her own example, she said that she brought Kareena Kapoor Khan on board as the ambassador for her Korean skincare line for a reason. “India Kareena ki sunta hai when it comes to skincare,” she said, offering the founders Rs 50 lakh for 1.25% equity, and Rs 50 lakh at 10% debt, on the condition that they lower their marketing spends.

As Vineeta was explaining her offer and conditions, Aman Gupta pretended to stab himself in the heart. He later told Vineeta that he was going to make an offer as well, but would’ve asked for 10% at least. The founders consulted among each other, and countered. But Vineeta didn’t negotiate at all. They ended up accepting her offer.
