Renuka Shahane says everyone wanted their brother to marry her after Hum Aapke Hain Koun: ‘Only got bhabhi ke offers’

Renuka Shahane spoke about Hum Aapke Hain Koun and how she was looked as 'bhabhi' after the Sooraj Barjatya-directed film.

It has been three decades since Hum Aapke Hai Koun released, but fans still remember, and adore Renuka Shahane as the perfect bhabhi. The actor played Salman Khan’s sister-in-law in the Rajshri Productions’ family drama, also starring Madhuri Dixit, Mohnish Behl, Anupam Kher, among others. In her recent visit to The Kapil Sharma Show, Renuka shared that she was flooded with offers of similar roles after the film.

Kapil Sharma first lauded the actor for having played Pooja so convincingly. He shared that people started expecting bhabhis to be like her. “Meri bhabhi bhi jab nayi nayi ghar pe aayi, maine bhi socha Renuka Shahane jaise behave kyu nahi kar rahi hai? (When my sister-in-law came home, I wondered why she was not behaving like Renuka Shahane),” the comedian said.

He then asked her whether she was offered bhabhi’s roles after the film or started getting wedding proposals. “Bhabhi ke role,” she quickly replied, adding, “Sab apne bhai ki shaadi mujhse karwana chah rahe the (Everyone wanted their brother to marry me).”

Renuka Shahane also opened up about the iconic scene in the film where she falls off the stairs and is fatally injured. As Kapil asked her if she was worried about getting hurt while filming the scene, Renuka replied that director Sooraj Barjatya had created a sponge staircase for the scene. He would even come and ask about her well-being every two minutes. “It was so soft I was actually enjoying rolling down it. I had to act to show the pain,” she laughed.

In an earlier interview with IANS, the actor had spoken about being ‘trapped’ in that image of Pooja bhabhi from Hum Aapke Hai Koun? “That image was so stuck into the memory of the mass audience that most of the time, people expected me to behave like Pooja bhabhi. The fact is I am a different individual in real life.

“I am not always giving that perfect smile to the world, I also get angry, curious and feel various other emotions… There are people I meet in public places who tell me, ‘But Pooja bhabhi to aise nahi baat karti hai’. To that, I have reacted saying, “Because I am Renuka, not Pooja bhabhi,” she said.
