Madhuri Dixit ‘insisted’ on Salman Khan wearing a nighty in Hum Aapke Hain Koun song, recalls Sooraj Barjatya: ‘She did his makeup’

Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit’s Hum Aapke Hain Koun remains one of the most beloved films in Hindi cinema history. Recently, the film’s director, Sooraj R. Barjatya, appeared on Indian Idol, where contestant Ritika performed the iconic song “Didi Tera Devar Deewana.” The performance brought back a flood of memories for Sooraj, who shared an interesting anecdote about how Madhuri convinced the makers to have Salman wear a nighty by the end of the song.

Speaking on the show, Sooraj revealed that they shot the song over 16 days. “This was a long and elaborate song that required 16 days of rehearsals and 9 days of filming. We wanted to end it on a high note, with a fun and victorious celebration,” he said, adding, “I suggested to my father that Salman should wear a nighty for the final scene. While Salman instantly agreed, my father rejected the idea, finding it inappropriate.”

Sooraj, however, wanted to check with his cast and crew before finalising the decision to have Salman wear a nighty. To his surprise, Madhuri loved the idea and strongly supported it. “But the entire team was so enthusiastic about it that we decided to put it to a vote among the ladies on set. All the dancers, including Madhuri, found the idea hilarious and insisted we go ahead with it. In the end, Madhuri herself did Salman’s makeup for the scene. Thank you for bringing back these wonderful memories!” Sooraj Barjatya recalled.

Hum Aapke Hain Koun featured a 14-song soundtrack, an anomaly even for the 90s. The film became the highest-grossing Indian film of 1994, breaking box office records at the time. It remains one of the most influential films in Indian cinema.
