An actor’s life swings like a pendulum, sometimes their career is at a high, and sometimes, it’s at an all-time low, occasionally it might see a pause too. This is exactly why actors also get so thick-skinned, dodging all kinds of curveballs life throws at them. Many such curveballs have been dodged by Sumona Chakravarti too whether it has been to build a decent life for herself or fulfill the big dream of having her own home.
As she participates in Khatron Ke Khiladi 14 now, the actor spoke to Indianexpress.com about her journey and owning a house in Mumbai, which by the way, came with a lot of struggle. In the conversation, Sumona shared how acquiring a bank loan to get a house was not as easy as it may have appeared. In Mumbai, renting a house comes with its vices, and if you are an actor, a woman, and single, rarely do those gates open to welcome you. To get out of this constant rigmarole, Sumona chose to buy her own house when she was 26 years old.

Sumona Chakravarti shared, “I bought my first house when I was 26. It is a simple small apartment in Mumbai, and everyone knows the real estate here is crazy. Actors don’t have an office-structured salary slip or a fixed payment monthly. I still remember how the bank guys were reluctant to give me a loan because I had no fixed monthly salary. Somebody with a monthly salary of Rs 20000 is a safer bet for a bank, than an actor, since it’s a high risk.”
“As an actor when we have EMIs to pay off, it becomes a challenge sometimes, especially in a situation like Covid. So when I was able to pay off that home loan, by far that has been my biggest achievement. You have financial setbacks, life throws massive curveballs, and I have been dodging many such ones,” added Sumona Chakravarti.
Sumona also said that every girl needs to have a roof of her own. She said, “I always say to girls in our country that having a roof of your own is very important. I often get asked when I am settling down in life, that is what I think is called being settled where you can fulfill the criteria of roti, kapda, makaan. Rest all will come and go.”
About her stint with Khatron Ke Khiladi 14, Sumona Chakravarti shares it is a way for her to fuel the adventurer in her. “The essence of this show is the stunts and adventure plays a very big role in my personal life. I have done bungee jumping thrice, I also had an accident and injured my shoulder once. I have done sky diving, I did an adventure sports-based travel show. I do white water rafting quite often, some of those trips have been crazy, my entire raft flipped completely upside down.”
Having a credible stint on TV especially with The Kapil Sharma Show, what prompted Sumona to take up the stunt-based reality show? She said, “People have offered other shows in the past and I have said no because I like to keep my private life and work life separate. So I thought if I ever have to do a reality show, this is probably the one. I am glad it has worked out that way.”
Talking of her plans on Khatron Ke Khiladi 14, Sumona shared, “I am looking forward to doing a car stunt. I am going to tell Rohit Sir to take me in his film. I want to blow up one car at least. I am also looking forward to stunts with cheetahs and other animals. I have had a lion very up close and personal. I had a close encounter with a tiger. I want to experience all that.”
