Two and a Half Men veteran Jon Cryer will star as the DC supervillain Lex Luthor in the TV show Supergirl. The CW TV show stars Melissa Benoist in the lead as the Kryptonian heroine Kara Zor-El or Supergirl and a cousin to Kal-El or Superman. Lex Luthor, who is traditionally an archenemy of Superman in different media, will be introduced in the fifteenth episode of the show’s fourth season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Supergirl’s executive producers Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller said in a statement, “We are enormous fans of Jon Cryer, and he was instantly our dream actor to play the iconic role of Lex Luthor. Jon is a super-talent, and the fact that he played Lenny Luthor in Superman IV brings an added layer of legacy to his casting. We’re beyond thrilled to welcome Jon to the Supergirl family.”
Cryer starred in all the 12 seasons of the CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men as Alan Harper. For his work on the show, he won two Primetime Emmys — Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2009 and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 2012.
Lex Luthor is a genius, megalomaniac businessman and the owner of LexCorp. He sees Superman as a threat to humanity and wants to get rid of him. The character has been played by actors like Gene Hackman (1978’s Superman), Kevin Spacey (2006’s Superman Returns) and Jesse Eisenberg (2016’s Batman v Superman).
