Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is set to appear on Indian television with a special cameo in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2. The promo released for the Star Plus show has Smriti’s character, Tulsi Virani, engaging in a video call with Gates.
She opens the conversation with her signature greeting, “Jai Shri Krishna”, which is echoed by Gates, who is on the other end of the call. Tulsi expresses her delight by saying in Hindi, “It feels really nice that you are connecting with my family directly from America. We are waiting for you eagerly.” Gates responds with “Thank you, Tulsi ji.”
This event will mark Gates’ second television cameo following his appearance on the American show The Big Bang Theory. However, his appearance on Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 will only be a virtual one. A Times of India reports suggests that during his appearance, Gates will focus on topics like maternal and newborn health, alongside the charitable efforts of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in these areas.
Irani, who previously served as the Minister for Women and Child Development, confirmed Gates’ participation in an interview with CNBC-TV18. She remarked, “This is a historic moment in Indian entertainment. For far too long, women and children’s health has remained on the margins of mainstream dialogue. This initiative is a powerful step towards changing that” She further added, “To bring together one of the world’s most respected global voices with one of Indian television’s most influential storytellers is more than a collaboration — it is the start of a Jan Andolan, a people’s movement rooted in awareness, empathy, and action.”
Produced by Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi first premiered in 2000. It became the longest running television show in India, running for 1833 episodes all the way till 2008. 17 years after the show went off air, it returned to television, along with streaming, earlier this year. This also marked Irani’s return to acting as she has been an active politician for over a decade now. She claimed that with the revival of her popular daily soap, her aim is to touch upon more social issues like they did previously, like body positivity, generation gap, and gender equality.
The latest episode of the show is scheduled to air on Star Plus at 10:30 pm on Thursday and will also be available for streaming on JioHotstar.
