Actress Ashnoor Kaur, now seen on the Colors TV show Suman Indori, has returned to the small screen after a three-year hiatus. Now in an exclusive interview with Indianexpress.com Ashnoor revealed that this break was planned for two reasons — she wanted to complete her graduation, and wanted the audience to forget her as a child actor. Now that she has returned to a daily soap, Ashnoor also reflected upon the content that is being made on Indian television and spoke about the challenges young actors like her face while navigating their way through the industry.
Discussing the reason behind her planned sabbatical, Ashnoor revealed that her college (Jaihind College) in Mumbai is very strict about attendance. But she always wanted to be a part of this institute as her idol Priyanka Chopra also studied here. “I have been working since a very young age, I wanted to take that break so that people forget that child and teenage image of me. And they would be able to accept me as a young adult,” she said.
Ashnoor has been acting on TV since the age of 5, she has starred in some really popular shows like Na Bole Tum Na Main Ne Kuch Kaha, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Patiala Babes, etc. In 2018, Ashnoor also starred in Sanju and Manmarizyaan. When asked what was it about Suman Indori that qualified to mark her return to the limelight. “Suman is a very empowering character. It is a very coming-of-age story and resonates with today’s audience,” she said pointing out how this is her third show with Colors TV after Na Bole Tum and Parineetii.
Talking about returning to TV, Ashnoor said, “I felt like I was back home. In these 3 years I did a lot of other mediums also. I did not know any other way as I was working from a very young age. I have known that every day you have to go on a set and work for 12 hours, all of that is in my blood.” She even commented on TV being looked at as a regressive medium today and explained, “I don’t think TV is a regressive medium, it has been progressing a lot, especially after the lockdown. Now the shows are not typical, saas-bahu dramas, more than 95 percent of them are women-led, and the new female leads are not damsels in distress, they are strong.”
She also added, “At the end of the day we serve what the audience wants, all these opinions are from a very urban perspective. But there is a larger chunk of audience that comes from tier 2 cities or rural areas who still relate to it. TV reaches people where your films cannot. We cannot make a drastic change because the audience won’t accept it.”
As she discussed this, she also recalled how her last show Patiala Babes inspired people. While talking about Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Ashnoor who played the younger Naira (before Shivangi Joshi) also praised her on-screen mother Hina Khan. When she was asked, if she got in touch with Hina after she was diagnosed with cancer, Ashnoor said, “I spoke to Hina, and conveyed my wishes to her. She is a very strong woman and the way she has been fighting everything that has come her way, I am sure she will get out of this very soon. She is working along with her treatment, which is incredible, I am sure she will continue showing her magic and strength to everyone.”
Ashnoor, who is 20 now, has had both good and bad experiences in the industry. “Today, all youngsters who are coming into the industry have to devote themselves to the show. Shooting for 12 hours is not a joke. You hardly get time for yourself, let alone your friends or social life. Balancing that while keeping your mental health in check, since you are shooting every day you cannot take care of your health, and that tiredness is seen on the face. That might invite trolling on social media, which we have to ignore.”
“Since I have been around for a while I am used to it. I know we shouldn’t pay heed to haters. But someone new might take it to heart, while you are in the limelight you are also exposed to this criticism by people. Living up to a certain standard, and looking a certain way, there are a lot of things that come when you take on this industry in a much direct manner,” Ashnoor told us.
