Music composer Amaal Mallik is seen as a contestant on the Salman Khan-hosted reality show Bigg Boss 19.  While on the show, Amaal has often revisited the struggles he and his family have seen while making a mark in the music arena. In the latest episode, Amaal was seen telling his fellow contestants how, despite being from the industry, meeting people was difficult for him. He even revisited a struggling phase when his family had to clear off debts worth Rs 4 crores, sharing that they were on the verge of losing their house. He recalled gate-crashing parties to make contacts, standing outside music label offices to get that one chance.

Revisiting how he once gate-crashed one of Ekta Kapoor’s success bash, Amaal said, “I attended Ekta Kapoor’s party once. With great difficulty, I got myself invited through a friend who was an AD. Despite being from the industry, it was not easy to meet people. At the party, I met a senior writer, who was in his zone and grabbed my t-shirt. He asked me, ‘What are you doing here?’ I told him that one of my friends invited me to the success party. He pulled me ahead and said, ‘Not now, but a year later, when you will be doing your life’s biggest song, I will be around, your time starts after a year.’ I don’t know why he said that, then he pushed me, and I still remember falling in slow motion. Maybe I heard what I needed, so I left from there. I started making songs. I used to go and stand outside T-series (name muted) every day because there were just two places where newcomers would get a chance.”

When Shehbaz Badesha asked why he didn’t use his father’s influence to bag projects, Amaal added, “I never used my father’s name anywhere to get work. Today, people know my face from Bigg Boss; earlier, they didn’t know what I looked like. I used to carry my equipment and stand outside, but the security would not allow me to go in. One day, Manmeet from Meet Bros recognized me and asked me why I was waiting outside. I told him I wanted to get work without using my father’s name. He respected that, but he said, ‘I cannot see you like that,’ and he invited me inside. He pointed out to Bhushan Kumar, and I ran towards the same lift. Till the time the lift reached the 8th floor, I gave four songs to him. Then I told him I was a musician and did songs for Jai Ho, was looking to do more work, but that time, he wasn’t looking for romantic songs. He told me to think about something else and come. When I was going down, on the fourth floor, I remembered about Sooraj Dooba Hai’s melody, and I ran back and made him hear it. He asked me who he should get the song written from, and I met the same senior writer. He remembered our meeting at the party.”

Amaal also spoke about the financial turmoil his family was going through at that time. He said, “Later, I went home and told mom and dad that one song had been passed, because that time our family was going through a bad time. There were loans of Rs 3.5-4 crore. Armaan was working; he started even at a younger age than me. He used to do voice-overs and earn Rs 10-15,000. The house and car were on the verge of being sold, my grandfather was very serious, and my father took a lot of loans during his hospitalization. There was a home loan too, and he wasn’t able to repay these, so it became a big issue. Now, after getting this song, the film was locked, but we didn’t get Ranbir Kapoor’s dates, so the film was pushed by one year, and that delay was a big deal for us. I still remember selling my music equipments to bear my expenses, because my mom and dad didn’t have that much money.”

Amaal also added that while Roy’s release got delayed after he bagged a song, he fortunately bagged a song in Sonam Kapoor and Fawad Khan-starrer Khoobsurat. “In between, there was a film called Khoobsurat. I saw its poster and wished to do a song in that. That time, Badshah was getting launched with Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai, the next day, I got a call offering a song called Naina in the film Khoobsurat,” Amaal recalled.
