Months after passing remarks against actor-model Chum Darang, which were widely perceived as derogatory and racist, controversial YouTuber-singer Elvish Yadav has issued an apology, claiming his words were misunderstood and misinterpreted. Elvish’s apology comes after facing rap from the National Commission for Women (NCW). On Tuesday, he appeared before the commission and expressed regret over his comments.
“As we grow in life and our age increases, maturity comes, and those who were bothered by the ‘Chum’ part — there are many people who did not understand my intentions,” he told news agency ANI following his appearance before the NCW. Elvish added, “I agree that if people are bothered by my statements, I must have said something wrong. In regard to this case, I went inside and apologised. I have nothing personal against anyone, nor do I hold grudges. I have submitted my apology to all the people I have hurt, especially Chum. I don’t even know her personally. But my apologies to everyone who has been hurt by my remarks.”
For the unversed, back in February, Elvish had passed some distasteful remarks against Chum Darang, hailing from Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh and known for her performances in movies such as Badhaai Do and Gangubai Kathiawadi. In a podcast with Rajat Dalal, the YouTuber-singer also commented on Chum’s relationship with her rumoured boyfriend Karan Veer Mehra.
“Karan Veer ko pakka Covid tha kyuki Chum kisko pasand aati hai bhai, itna taste kiska kharab hota hai? Aur Chum ke toh naam mai hi ashleelta hai. Naam Chum aur kaam Gangubai Kathiawadi mai kiya hai. (Karan Veer must have suffered from Covid, otherwise who would like Chum? Who has such bad taste? And there is vulgarity in the name of Chum. Her name is Chum and she has worked in Gangubai Kathiawadi),” he said. Chum and Karan grew close during their time on Bigg Boss 18.
She indirectly responded to Elvish’s comments in a cryptic social media note. “Disrespecting someone’s identity and name is not ‘fun’. Mocking someone’s achievements is not ‘banter’. It’s time we drew the line between humour and hate. What’s even more disappointing is that this wasn’t just about my ethnicity; my hard work and a film backed by a visionary like Sanjay Leela Bhansali were also disrespected,” she wrote. The Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) also strongly condemned his “derogatory and racist” remarks.
Incidentally, this is not the first time Elvish’s name has made headlines for the wrong reasons. Earlier this year, the Rajasthan Police had registered a case against him for allegedly posting a “fake video” and tarnishing the department’s image. In January, the Ghaziabad police booked him, along with a couple of others, for purportedly threatening the complainant and key witnesses in the Noida snake venom case. Last year, Elvish was booked by the Gurgaon police for allegedly beating up fellow YouTuber Sagar Thakur over social media rivalry.
