At the press meet of Merry Christmas in Chennai, Vijay Sethupathi was asked about Tamil Nadu government forcing people not to learn Hindi. Sethupathi lashed out at a reporter saying that wasn't true.

Vijay Sethupathi, Katrina Kaif, Sriram Raghavan, and the crew of Merry Christmas were in Chennai to promote the bi-lingual film. During a press meet, Sethupathi was asked about doing a Hindi film while the politics of Tamil Nadu is against the imposition of the language. The 96 actor lost his cool and asked what was the point of the question.

The actor was asked, “Tamil Nadu politics, for the past 75 years has been against Hindi-imposition. Even now, we are wearing ‘Hindi Theriyadhu Poda (Don’t Know Hindi Poda)’ t-shirts…” Before the reporter could finish the question, Sethupathi interrupted, “You asked the same question when Aamir Khan Sir was here. Why do you do that? What’s the point of the question? What is the point of asking it to people like me?”

The host of the event tried to de-escalate the situation by moving on to the next question, but Vijay Sethupathi didn’t want to let go of the issue. He probed, “No, wait a minute. What’s the point of the question.” The reporter said, “It is because, in Tamil Nadu, we keep getting told that we shouldn’t learn Hindi…”

Sethupathi replied, “Firstly, no one said anything of that sort. We never said not to study Hindi. All we are saying is not to impose Hindi. There’s a difference. People are learning Hindi here. Your question is wrong. It is an unnecessary and irrelevant question for the event. No one has stopped anyone from learning Hindi. You have to see the explanation even by PTR (Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, Tamil Nadu Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services of Tamil Nadu). Thank you.” The press meet ended on a sour note.

Vijay Sethutpathi will be seen next in Merry Christmas, which will be released on January 12. The movie also stars Katrina Kaif, Radhika Apte, Sanjay Kapoor, and Vinayak Pathak in important roles. The film will be released both in Hindi and Tamil.
