Back in 2017, a newcomer named Nithilan turned a lot of heads with the film Kurangu Bommai, which garnered good reviews. The same year Lokesh Kanagaraj also made his debut with Maanagaram and Sri Ganesh entered Kollywood with 8 Thottakal. All three directors were promising but only Lokesh became popular, while Ganesh took a long time to come up with his sophomore film, Kuruthi Aattam (2022), which ended up being a damp squib. On the other hand, Nithilan has been missing in action completely, only to return now, after five long years, with the film Maharaja. One has to say, he has made quite a comeback as the film has Vijay Sethupathi and Anurag Kashyap in the lead roles.
The first poster of Maharaja features a chess piece. The king piece casts a shadow that depicts the abstract faces of the lead actors. Maharaja is Sethupathi’s 50th film. Other than Sethupathi and Kashyap, the movie also has Natty and Mamta Mohandas in the lead roles. Abhirami, Arul Doss, Munishkanth, Boys Manikandan, Singam Puli, Bharathiraja, Vinod Sagar, and PL Thenappan are other actors in the film.
Ajaneesh Loknath of Kantara fame has composed the music for Maharaja. The film’s shoot has been wrapped up and it’s in the post-production phase.
Maharaja is jointly produced by Sudhan Sundaram of Passion Studios and Jagadish Palanisamy of The Route.
