There are only a handful of Tamil lead actors who find themselves being constant collaborators with ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam. One of them is actor Trisha, who has headlined his films like Aaytha Ezhuthu and the Ponniyin Selvan film series. She is also part of his upcoming film, Thug Life, which also marks the filmmaker’s first film with Kamal Haasan since their 1987 collaboration, Nayakan. Interestingly, this film also marks the reunion of Trisha and Silambarasan TR after the cult classic, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya (2010). Select members of the cast and crew of Thug Life were in attendance at an event in Chennai, which marked the launch of the first single from the film.

Talking about coming together with Silambarasan for a feature film for the first time since the Gautham Vasudev Menon directorial, Trisha said, “Many have been asking about when Simbu and I would be working together since VTV. We are finally here, and you will be seeing some magic in this film.”

Thug Life marks their third film together after Alai and Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, and Trisha spoke about how their friendship has only evolved over the years. “We have been friends for a very long time. And there is a huge difference in our characters in Thug Life when compared to our previous films,” said Trisha, also letting in a little inside information that she isn’t part of the gangster portions of the film, which also stars Joju George, Abhirami, Nasser, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and Ashok Selvan.

“I am not there in the gangster portions, but I’ve heard it has come out really well,” said Trisha, who also opened up about working with Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan, with whom she has shared screen space in Manmadhan Ambu and Thoongavanam. “I was quite young when I did my first films with them, but they make sure they go out of their way to break the bubble,” said Trisha, who went on to add that because both of them insist on thorough rehearsals, things are much smoother on the sets.

“I share a nice comfort with both Mani sir and Kamal sir. They don’t maintain a sense of hierarchy on the sets, and are the same way with everyone. This is probably why they are legends. Also, it is impressive how Kamal sir still treats every film as his first film,” said Trisha, who assured that this is the just the first round of promotions, and the audience will be seeing more of them as the release date comes closer.
