2023 has, so far, been a great year for actor, singer Shruti Haasan. She played pivotal characters in two blockbuster Telugu films — Veera Simha Reddy and Waltair Veerayya — made a cameo appearance in another critically acclaimed hit movie, Hi Nanna, and also released her third solo song “Monster Machine”. Now, wrapping up the year on a high note, Shruti is set to grace the screens in Prashanth Neel’s Prabhas-starrer Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire, which is scheduled to hit the screens on December 22.

Meanwhile, Shruti recently opened up about why she decided to give up drinking and her journey to sobriety. During a chat with Untriggered with Aminjaz, she was asked if she parties a lot. Shruti responded, saying, “I used to. But I’ve been sober for eight years now. So, it’s hard to tolerate people in party situations when you’re not drinking.”

“I have zero regrets, zero hangovers, and it’s just been the best to be sober for me,” she mentioned while stressing that she doesn’t judge anyone for drinking. “It might be a phase, or you might like doing it for the rest of your life, that’s chill.”

“I was never into drugs, but alcohol was a big thing in my life. [After a point] It just didn’t serve me at all anymore, in any positive way… I was [always] hungover, and I always wanted to drink with my friends… So, I felt like it was more in control of me,” she noted, adding that cigarettes are the worst.

Shruti also shared that she took the step to distance herself from many people, particularly freeloaders, who exacerbated her drinking habits by constantly suggesting partying. “This, too, is part of being sober,” she remarked.

Daughter of veteran actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika, Shruti entered the world of cinema by lending her voice to the song “Potri Paadadi Ponne”, composed by Ilaiyaraaja for Bharathan’s Thevar Magan, starring her father in the lead role. Her first on-screen appearance was in Kamal’s Hey Ram.
