Retro box office collection day 3: Fans in Chennai queued up on Thursday to catch the first day first show of Retro, an action thriller which marks the first collaboration between actor Suriya and filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj. Given his last hit, Jigarthanda DoubleX in 2023, Subbaraj was expected to give a nudge to Suriya, whose last film, Siva’s period action drama Kanguva, failed to take off at the box office last year. However, Retro has been witnessing the same trajectory as Kanguva.

As per industry tracker Sacnilk, Retro opened to Rs 24 crore on Thursday. However, it saw a major dip on Friday, with the daily earnings plummeting to Rs 7.75 crore. Retro was expected to pick up on Saturday, given it’s a weekend, but the film earned exactly as much as it did on Friday (Rs 7.75 crore), and continues to hover around the Rs 7 crore mark.

The total domestic box office collection of Retro so far, in three days, stands at Rs 34.75 crore. While the language-vise distribution is yet to be ascertained, Retro has earned the most in its native language of Tamil, followed by the dubbed versions of Telugu and Hindi, respectively. Its three-day trajectory has been much like Kanguva, which opened at Rs 28.5 crore, before dipping to Rs 11.25 crore on day 2 and barely rising to Rs 11.75 crore on the third day. Kanguva earned Rs 81.22 crore in its lifetime at the domestic box office.

The Tamil version of Retro had a low theatre occupancy of 28.28% on Saturday morning. It picked up during the afternoon with 45.02%, saw a minor dip in the evening with 42.16%, before registering the maximum occupancy in the night shows, at 54.74%.

The Sunday (day 4) earnings are crucial for Retro to recover from the Saturday stagnancy and register a decent extended opening weekend total at the domestic box office.

Along with Suriya, Retro also stars Pooja Hegde, Jayaram, Joju George, Karunakaran, Nassar, and Prakash Raj in prominent roles. Shriya Saran also has a special cameo in the movie.
