One of the biggest clashes at the box-office was supposed to happen earlier this month with Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan and Suriya’s Kanguva hitting the screens on the same day. However, KE Gnanavel Raja of Studio Green, who is backing the Siva directorial, and Suriya backed out of the clash citing ‘immense respect for the Superstar’. This ensured both Vettaiyan and Kanguva would receive solo releases enabling the films to be individual successes at the global box-office. In what can be seen as a warm reciprocation to the wonderful gesture by team Kanguva, Rajinikanth sent them a video message, which was played during the audio launch.
In the video byte, Rajinikanth revealed that he was invited to attend the launch, but missed due to scheduling conflicts. Starting off by praising Gnanavel Raja’s vision and ambition, Rajinikanth said, “Gnanavel knows everything about cinema. He knows how to promote a film.” Kanguva also marks director Siva’s follow-up to the Rajinikanth-starrer Annaatthe, and the actor spoke fondly about the filmmaker. “Although I have done just one film with him, I developed a bonding with Siva as if we’d done 25-30 films. He has a beautiful mind and calm voice, and genuinely understands what people need when they come to the theatres,” said the Kaala actor.
Speaking about Siva’s efficient filmmaking style, especially how he completed the whole film in a studio set, including the extensive Kolkata portions of Annaatthe, Rajinikanth revealed how Kanguva was supposed to be made for him. “Actually, during the filming of Annaatthe, I spoke to Siva, and asked if he could write a period film for me. He was pumped up about it too, and I definitely think Kanguva was written for me. It then reached Gnanavel and Suriya,” said the superstar.
Rajinikanth, who has worked with Suriya’s father and veteran actor Sivakumar in multiple projects, spoke very highly of the 82-year-old legend. “He is a thorough gentleman, who is intelligent, honest, and immensely respectable. Suriya has imbibed all those qualities,” said Rajinikanth, adding, “From his first film, Suriya has this thirst to do something new. Yes, it is still within the commercial cinema format, but Suriya wants to do something really different. I wish Kanguva is a massive success for Siva, Gnanavel Raja, and Suriya.”
