Amazon Prime Video has come out with the streaming release announcement for Rajinikanth’s Coolie, which is still running in some theatres. The film, which opened to mixed reviews, is one of the biggest releases of the year, and together with War 2 revived the summer box office. This action film, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, which was also the most anticipated release of the year, will be hitting streaming on September 11, next week. Coolie, featuring an ensemble star cast consisting of Aamir Khan, Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, and Shruthi Haasan, has managed to break several box office records, though the film did not perform as expected considering the pre-release hype and marketing push it received.
Amazon Prime Video’s Instagram handle posted the streaming announcement, “Get ready to vibe with the saga of Deva, Simon, and Dahaa #CoolieOnPrime, Sep 11.” The film has a musical score by Anirudh Ravichandar, while Girish Gangadharan handled the cinematography. Coolie drew criticism for its convoluted screenplay and unnecessary cameos that did nothing for its storyline. Set against the backdrop of a a sprawling smuggling empire, this action entertainer told the story of an ex-coolie who is forced to reckon with the death of a close friend after many years and is drawn back to the world of organ trafficking and smuggling led by the evil Simon and gang.

Coolie also featured a brief flashbacks sequence with a digitally de-aged Rajinikanth using an AI-rendered voice from his older films, which was undoubtedly the best part of the film. A pan-Indian release with simultaneous regional language dubbed visions, Coolie did good business across the country and outside, clearly dominating the box office clash with War 2 in the Independence day week releases. The streaming release will be primarily in the original Tamil language version, with additional dubbed versions in Telugu, Hindi and Kannada. Coolie’s release also overlapped with the celebration of Rajinikanth’s 50 glorious years in Indian cinema.
