Superstars Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan embody the cinematic duality that has defined Tamil cinema for decades. Having begun their journeys around the same time, the two stalwarts have shaped and influenced the industry over the years. With Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie boosting Tamil cinema’s commercial momentum, reports now suggest a possible collaboration between the legendary duo. The stalwarts last shared screen space in Alauddinum Albhuta Vilakkum (1979) and have since gone on to establish successful, independent careers.
According to reports, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan will portray ageing gangsters in a big-budget action drama to be directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. However, no official confirmation has been made regarding the plot or other production details. The project is expected to be bankrolled by Raaj Kamal Films International, Kamal Haasan’s production house, which has previously backed films such as Vikram, Sivakarthikeyan’s Amaran, and Thug Life.
Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan’s on-screen association dates back to 1975, when they first appeared together in K Balachandar in Apoorva Raagangal, with Rajinikanth playing the antagonist. Over the years, they have collaborated on several movies, including Moondru Mudichu, Avargal, 16 Vayathinile, and Ninaithaale Inikkum, among others. Now, after more than four decades, it appears that the right story and the right filmmaker may finally have created the opportunity to bring the two legends together once again. News of their potential reunion has generated considerable buzz among fans, who are eager to see the two icons share the screen again after 46 years.
Meanwhile, Coolie has amassed over Rs 206.5 crore nett in just five days at the Indian box office. Globally, the action drama has crossed the Rs 404 crore mark.
