Following in the footsteps of Nelson’s Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer, P Vasu’s Tamil horror comedy, Chandramukhi 2 is also gearing up for an OTT premiere on the 28th day of its theatrical release.
Announcing the addition of Chandramukhi 2 to its extensive list of south titles, Netflix wrote on social media, “Screaming: Cause Chandramukhi is going to have us on the edge of our seats soon!😱 Chandramukhi 2, streams on 26th Oct on Netflix.”
The film will be available for streaming in Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi languages as well, apart from the original Tamil.
Starring Raghava Lawrence, Kangana Ranaut, Lakshmi Menon, Vadivelu, Radhika Sarathkumar and Mahima Nambiar in key roles, Chandramukhi 2 was a sequel to Rajinikanth and Jyothika’s blockbuster film, Chandramukhi (2005), helmed by P Vasu himself.
During a media interaction ahead of the film’s release, actor Kangana Ranaut had taken pride in saying that she was playing the titular role and not the character who gets possessed by the ghost. “I am a fan of Jyotika Ma’am’s Chandramukhi myself. However, unlike before, I am playing the real Chandramukhi in this film. I am not the one who gets possessed by Chandramukhi. That’s the difference. My character will reveal why she became a ghost in the first place.”
“Lakshmi Menon’s character is the one which is inspired by Jyotika ma’am’s character. What I am doing in the film is playing the original Chandramukhi (laughs),” she said. Chandramukhi 2 was Kangana Ranaut’s third film in Tamil after Dham Dhoom and Thalaivii.
Despite arriving with high expectations, the film was panned by both critics and audiences, ultimately resulting in a major commercial failure. Produced with an estimated budget of Rs 60-65 crore, the movie grossed only Rs 51.7 crore globally, as reported by industry tracker Sacnilk.
In his review of the film, The Indian Express’ Kirubhakar Purushothaman trashed Chandramukhi 2, dubbing it as a melodramatic sequel that at times comes across as a high-budgeted parody.
