Pa Ranjith: ‘While shooting Thangalaan, I did lose my cool a couple of times…’

While Ranjith has previously attempted a period film with Sarpatta Parambarai, which was set in the Madras of 70s and 80s, Thangalaan is a new attempt altogether.

With just days left for the release of Pa Ranjith’s much-anticipated Vikram-starrer Thangalaan, the hype around the film is getting bigger and better. If the trailer and the songs have set the right buzz for the film, the interviews of the important stakeholders are amping up the expectations. In a recent interview with Film Companion, Ranjith revealed that Thangalaan was his most challenging film to date.

“Most of the films I have made so far have been easy to shoot. Of course, I had difficulties, but the process was easy. But I was stepping out of my comfort zone with Thangalaan,” said Ranjith, who is working with Vikram for the first time in the film, which is set to be released on August 15.

While Ranjith has previously attempted a period film with Sarpatta Parambarai, which was set in the Madras of 70s and 80s, Thangalaan is a new attempt altogether. “The film is set in the 19th century, and I had a lot of difficulties in the setting. It was a challenge to manage the huge number of people on the sets, extracting performances from the actors, staying true to the era in terms of each department, etc… It was an intense and pressurised situation,” said Ranjith, adding that the intensity got to him at times. “I am generally a calm person on sets, and never allow my anger to get the better of me. However, while shooting Thangalaan, I did lose my cool a couple of times. It was that intense.”

Backed by Studio Green’s KE Gnanavel Raja, Thangalaan also stars Parvathy, Malavika Mohanan, Pasupathy, and Daniel Caltagirone in pivotal roles. With music by GV Prakash Kumar and cinematography by Kishore Kumar, Thangalaan will also be released in 3D on August 15.
