Tamil music director MC Sabesan, better known as Sabesh, passed away in Chennai on Thursday after a prolonged illness. He was 68.
Sabesh was one half of the music director duo Sabesh-Murali. The duo began their musical journey by assisting their brother, the legendary composer Deva. Composing the background score for the Prashanth-starrer Jodi in 1999 proved to be a turning point for the music director duo. They were given the opportunity to score the film’s background music due to the limited availability of AR Rahman, who had composed the songs for the movie. The success of their work on Jodi helped them gain recognition and marked the beginning of their career as music directors in Tamil cinema, starting with Samuthiram.
Sabesh-Murali went on to compose songs for several Tamil films, including, Goripalayam, Milaga, Thavamai Thavamirundhu, Paarai, Adaikalam, Imsai Arasan 23rd Pulikecei, Pokkisham, Engal Aasan, and Koodal Nagar, among many others. Some of their notable background scores include those for Autograph, Paarijatham, Thalaimagan, and Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam. The last film they composed songs for was Kavaathu (2017), while their final work as background score composers was for the Bharathiraja-starrer Meendum Oru Mariyathai (2020).
Sabesh, who also crooned several songs, also served as the president of the Cine Musicians’ Union until his passing.
The music director is survived by his daughters, Geetha and Archana, and his son, Karthik, who is an actor.
Sabesh’s final rites will be performed on October 24 at 3 pm at his residence.
