After an underwhelming start at the box office, superstar Rajinikanth’s daughter Aishwarya Rajinikanth’s directorial Lal Salaam failed to pick up pace on its first Saturday. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film garnered a mere Rs 3 crore on Saturday, bringing its total domestic collection to Rs 6.55 crore.

Despite Rajinikanth’s extended cameo, the film’s opening day collection of Rs 3.55 crore fell below expectations. Its performance further dwindled on the second day. Although Rajinikanth’s presence was heavily showcased in the trailer and promotional clips, aimed at enticing his fanbase to theatres, it failed to translate into substantial box office numbers.

Lal Salaam pales in comparison to Rajinikanth’s previous releases. For instance, his last film, Jailer, raked in a staggering Rs 56.6 crore on its opening day, far surpassing Lal Salaam’s Rs 3.55 crore. Similarly, on the second day, Jailer earned Rs 30.3 crore.

Despite being marketed as a sports drama, Lal Salaam has garnered attention primarily for its political themes, touching upon issues like caste oppression and religious discrimination.

Indianexpress.com’s Kirubhakar Purushothaman gave the film 2.5 stars and wrote, “It is jarring and archaic. Even the characters like the ones played by Senthil and Thambi Ramaiah come across as someone from the Tamil melodramas of the early ’90s. A long monologue from Senthil about the importance of the village festival concluded with tears is not in tune with 2024. Lal Salaam is also didactic, and AR Rahman’s initial inhibitions that the film might turn our preachy and cringey weren’t unfounded. The message of harmony and peace is welcome. But what about the medium?”
