Following the massive success of his Ponniyin Selvan franchise, actor Karthi is currently gearing up for the release of Raju Murugan’s actioner Japan.
The teaser of Japan, also starring Anu Emmanuel, Sunil and Vijay Milton, had created excitement by revealing that Karthi will be appearing in a never-seen-before avatar in the film, which is expected to be a grand action spectacle.
Meanwhile, Karthi recently opened up about how his father and yesteryear hero Sivakumar discouraged both him and his brother Suriya from venturing into the film industry. Karthi also pointed out that Sivakumar consistently emphasised the importance of his children having a strong educational foundation.
“Dad always pushed us away from films, he didn’t want us to do anything with films. He said, ‘get educated, study well, get your degrees, we should always be well-educated,” Karthi told Variety.
Due to his father’s encouragement, Karthi pursued engineering in Chennai and later did higher studies in the US. While there, his aptitude for graphic design sparked a realisation of his desire to work in the creative sphere, leading him to enrol in filmmaking courses. After returning to India, Karthi joined ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam as an assistant, and, in turn, became an actor. He made his acting debut in Ameer’s highly acclaimed Paruthiveeran in 2007.
Despite being brothers who also share a close bond, Karthi and Suriya have never shared screen space in a film together. The only instance of their collaboration was when Karthi served as an assistant director on Mani Ratnam’s political actioner Aayutha Ezhuthu, which featured Suriya and Madhavan in the lead roles.
Mentioning that there was considerable excitement among people to see all three of them, including Sivakumar, together, Karthi noted that their father had lost interest in being in front of the camera.
“But my brother and myself, we are very keen that we should find a good story and do it. Very rarely are brothers in the same industry. And we really want to do one good film together for sure. Earlier, I was scared. Now we are both certain, we have to do one,” he added.
While Karthi’s Japan will hit screens in November during the Deepavali season, Suriya is currently working on Siva’s period action drama Kanguva.
