In a major relief for the makers and fans, director Venkat Prabhu’s sci-fi action film The Greatest of All Time (GOAT), starring “Thalapathy” Vijay in the lead role, has received government approval to hold a special show on its release day on Thursday (September 5). On August 24, production company AGS Entertainment, which is bankrolling GOAT, had requested the Tamil Nadu government’s permission to increase the number of screenings.
“A big thank you to our Tamil Nadu Government and @Udhaystalin na for granting special shows and extending the show time and supporting cinema as always,” AGS’ CEO Archana Kalpathi wrote on X (formerly Twitter) while sharing a copy of the government order. According to the notice, theatres in Tamil Nadu are permitted to hold five screenings of Vijay’s penultimate movie on its release day, with the first show beginning at 9 am and the last show ending at 2 am. Although the producers had requested permission for special screenings over the first two days, the government only approved it for one day.
The government order, Dheeraj Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary to the Tamil Nadu government, mentions that the Principal Secretary to the Government/Commissioner of Revenue Administration (Full Additional Charge) was consulted for her input on AGS Entertainment’s request. She noted that if additional shows are allowed, adequate arrangements must be made in coordination with the police to avoid health hazards and overcrowding in theatres.
She also stated that the government could make a decision in accordance with the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, for granting permission for one special show on September 5 and 6, after making proper security arrangements to ensure that people can enter and leave theatres without difficulty, and by providing sufficient time for staff to clean and maintain the halls. After careful consideration, the government informed the makers that they could hold one special show on Thursday, making it a total of five shows, in all theatres across the state.
While the first show in Tamil Nadu is scheduled to start at 9 am, the First Day First Show (FDFS) of GOAT will begin as early as 4 am in Kerala, Karnataka and the USA, with Andhra Pradesh and Telangana starting their screenings from 6 am, according to the Times of India.
Besides Vijay, The Greatest of All Time also stars Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, Ajmal Ameer and Mohan in key roles. The film’s cinematography is by Siddhartha Nuni, with editing by Venkat Raajen and music composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
