Rajinikanth’s Coolie has shattered records at the North American box office. The 75-year-old has once again proved why he is called Thalaivar. His latest film, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has become the biggest Tamil opening weekend grosser worldwide, beating Rajini’s own blockbuster 2.0 from 2018, which previously held the top spot. The movie has suprassed its breakeven point and the numbers so far show it’s performing exceptionally well in North America, even overshadowing the run of the Hollywood horror film Weapons.
The movie, which also stars Nagarjuna Akkineni, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Shruti Haasan and a cameo by Amir Khan, has created history in the U.S. and Canada too. Coolie managed to make $3.04 million on premiere day, the highest ever for a Tamil film. In just four days, it earned over $6 million, crossing the lifetime earnings of 2.0 ($5.43 million) at the North American box office. Advance bookings for Rajinikanth’s juggernaut alone had crossed $3 million, and according to reports, shows in major cities like New York, LA, Chicago, Toronto, and Houston were housefull. This makes Coolie one of the top Tamil films in North America, only behind Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 ($6.4M).
With ₹393 crores ($45M) in 4 days, Coolie has topped global box office charts above some international hits. The film is about a former coolie union leader who is determined to investigate his friend’s death and eventually realises there is an entire crime syndicate operating. Rajinikanth now has three of the top films in North America. Still, 2.0 remains the biggest grosser of Tamil cinema with around ₹700 crores worldwide, and now Coolie aims to overtake that.
