Tu Hi Re from Mani Ratnam’s Bombay is one of the iconic songs that established AR Rahman in Bollywood. In fact, the entire album was a stupendous hit, which announced the emergence of a new formidable talent in India. The song, sung by Hariharan and Kavita Krishnamurthy, continues to be a fan favourite even after 27 years since its release. However, singer KS Chitra, who sang its Tamil version, Uyire, recently revealed that she had also sung Tu Hi Re but her vocals were later replaced by Kavita’s version.
In an interview with O2 India, the veteran singer said, “I sang both Uyire and the Hindi version Tu Hi Re. Then Rahman ji personally called me and said ‘We may have to change one song’ because the audio label complained that the album is full of singers from the South and they wanted singers in the North also to be included. So, Rahman called me and asked for my permission. That’s something I appreciate. Nobody else does that. He told me he is going to change. It is one of his qualities, I really admire.”
Chitra also added that singing the song with Hariharan on stage is always a frightening experience. “When I first sang the song, Hari ji hadn’t sung his part. Only later, I found he had improvised a lot in the song. I worried if I have done enough because I had sung the song already. Even on stage, he keeps improvising the song and I get scared if I will get the timing right,” she said.
KS Chitra has so far sung about 25000 thousand songs in languages including Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, Odia, Bengali, Punjabi, Gujarati, Tulu, Rajasthani, Urdu, Sanskrit, and Badaga. Having won six National Awards, she is fondly called the Nightingale of the South. She recently sang an emotional number in Vijay’s Varisu, titled Soul of Varisu in S Thaman’s composition. She also collaborated with AR Rahman for Ponniyin Selvan 2 for the song Veera Raja Veera.
