Selena Gomez has recently opened up about her inability to carry her own children due to health concerns. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the 32-year-old singer and actress shared how she had to come to terms with this heartbreaking reality, saying it was something she had to “grieve”, according to a report by BBC.
“I’ve never said this before, but unfortunately, I can’t carry my own children,” Gomez told the publication. “I have a lot of medical conditions that would put both my life and the baby’s life at risk. That was a loss I had to grieve for a while,” BBC reported.
Gomez has long been open about her struggles with lupus, an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues.
In 2017, she underwent a kidney transplant as a result of complications from lupus. She has also spoken publicly about her journey with bipolar disorder, which was featured in her documentary ‘My Mind and Me’.
However, she has expressed hope for the future, considering alternative paths to motherhood, such as surrogacy or adoption. “It’s not the way I imagined it would happen,” she said in her Vanity Fair interview.
“I thought it would be the way it happens for everyone, but I’m in a much better place now. I feel blessed that there are options like surrogacy and adoption, both of which are huge possibilities for me.”
Gomez, whose mother Mandy Teefey was adopted, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to become a mother through different means.
“I’m thankful that there are people willing to do surrogacy or adoption. I’m excited for that journey, even if it looks different from what I once envisioned. In the end, it will be my baby,” as reported by BBC.
The singer is currently in a relationship with music producer Benny Blanco.
