What if the mridangam clashed with the beat of a rap verse? This question, part curiosity, part creative provocation, became the starting point for maverick music producer Viveick Rajagopalan. The result: Ta Dhoom, a 15-minute documentary that, on the surface, explores the coming together of two radically different sonic worlds. But dig deeper, and it’s much more than that.

Directed by Rohit More, Ta Dhoom traces Rajagopalan’s collaboration with three young Mumbai-based rappers, MC Mawali, MC TodFod, and MC Artlord, whose rhymes are defined by the struggles of daily life. Each of them brings a raw, streetwise energy, characterised by their respective languages and lived experiences. Ergo, their introduction to Konnakol, (by Rajagopalan) the South Indian art of vocal percussion, doesn’t dilute that energy, but instead seeks to reshape it.

Veteran filmmaker Bharatbala, reflecting on Ta Dhoom in a social media post, wrote: “This is why I choose to bring these stories to life. They remind us that tradition is never old, it just waits to be heard again and embraced again. They’re reminders that even pain can be turned to gold, if one’s willing to learn and grow. Ta Dhoom is the story of two sounds, two worlds that no one thought could live together…”

One of the most powerful moments in Ta Dhoom comes when Rajagopalan speaks candidly about the project’s essence. Ta Dhoom, he says, is at its core “an amalgamation of poetry and rhythm.” The impact of this fusion is immediately evident as the three rappers reflect on their journey, how they never imagined such a blend was possible, and how deeply the experience has transformed them, both artistically and personally.
