Singer Liam Payne’s death came as a shock to his fans and peers. The English singer rose to fame as part of the boy band One Direction. Recently one of his former bandmates, Louis Tomlinson sat down to have a chat about the band, its ups and downs, and of course his relationship with Liam. He recalled how Liam was very different from him, and they had a very complicated relationship while they worked together.
Louis pulled back the curtain on his life during an appearance on the Life of a CEO podcast. He talked extensively about Liam, the nature of their relationship, and his death. The singer said, “Liam was quite different. His journey was a lot different from mine. I just felt like a ‘happy-go-lucky’ guy at that point. Whereas Liam was very precise and deliberate, and he got there because of all his hard work. I was never a dweller.”
He continued, “Yes, even I gave three auditions for X Factor, but really the moments of rejection weren’t too taxing. For Liam, it became his life ever since he was a teenager. I mean, he sang at West Brom stadium before any of us had done anything.”
Louis Tomlinson commented on his relationship with Liam Payne after the group split in 2016 and said, “We definitely became best friends after the breakup. It took us a couple of years. We used to butt our heads a lot when we were in the band. He had been working since the age of 14, and he worked very hard to get to where he was in the band. Sometimes I used to be getting ready to go somewhere late in the night, and he would say something along the lines of ‘We have a photoshoot tomorrow morning’ or something like that. We never saw eye to eye on those matters. Liam came from a very sensible point of view, because he had given so much to all of it.”
Louis also recalled how he was getting back to his house after dropping his son off at school when he heard about Liam’s passing. He admitted that the message he wrote for his friend was extremely difficult to jot down and that it was equally difficult to keep it short. Louis said, “There were a lot of things which I never would have said to him when we were in the band; I had too much pride. But we all looked up to him, just because of all the reasons I just stated. He was the safest pair of hands, in every sense of the word. Whether it is the vocals, or a music video, or even an interview, Liam would always have his eye on the ball. My role in the band was being disruptive, and he was completely opposite, and his role of keeping everything on track was equally important, if not more.”
Liam Payne passed away in 2024 at the age of 31, when he fell to his death from the balcony of a hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is survived by his son Bear.
