Just as much as his artistic career and contributions, singer-musician Anup Jalota’s personal life has garnered significant attention over the years, particularly his three marriages. In a recent interview, he opened up about his views on marriage and how he has been coping with the loss of his third wife, Medha Gujral, with whom he shared a deep bond. He also spoke about son Aryaman and how he got the best of grades during the difficult times and later went on to study at the prestigious Princeton university, an Ivy League school.

Anup initially married Sonali Sheth, then a music student from Gujarat and later a singer, with whom he had fallen in love during the early stages of his career. However, the couple eventually parted ways. He then agreed to his parents’ wish for an arranged marriage and tied the knot with Bina Bhatia. Unfortunately, that relationship also did not last long, and they got divorced. As if a believer of the adage, “third time’s a charm,” Anup married again, this time to Medha Gujral, niece of former Indian Prime Minister IK Gujral and legendary director Shekhar Kapur’s first wife. Although their marriage was strong, unlike Anup’s previous relationships, fate played spoilsport when Medha passed away in 2014 following multiple organ failure.

In a recent interview, the bhajan maestro shared that he doesn’t find anything wrong with marrying three times. However, he asserted that having multiple partners simultaneously is wrong. “Teen shaadi karna bura nahi hai. Lekin teen biwiyan rakhna galat hai (It is not wrong to marry three times, but it is wrong to have three wives at the same time),” he said during a chat with actor Kunickaa Sadanand.

Anup continued, “Suppose someone’s first two wives passed away, is it wrong to get married for the time? If he’s young he can do that.” When asked if he would consider tying the knot for the fourth time, Anup immediately said no. “I think I am still revelling in Medha’s love. I fell in love with her a little too much. In fact, her clothes, makeup items, and so on are still at my house. I have kept everything safe in her cupboard. I don’t think I can remarry now,” he added.

Calling Medha his “best wife,” Anup recalled telling her, “You are my final wife.” He continued, “When her health was deteriorating, she asked me if my feelings for her were still the same. I said, ‘Yes! The promise still stands. You are my final wife.’ (When she was unwell) She used to tell me, ‘I can see how difficult all this is for you and how well you are taking care of me. So, you can have an affair with someone.’ My response was, ‘What can I do? You are not leaving my mind.’ We shared wonderful times together.” Mentioning that she had undergone one heart transplant by then, Anup shared that while preparations were underway for her second heart transplant and a kidney transplant, she passed away.

“When our son (Aryaman) was studying, we both used to take him to school. I used to take her in her wheelchair. First, he studied at the Bombay Scottish School, then at the Singapore International School, and finally at Princeton University. We went everywhere and took good care of her. I don’t feel like she left me; I can still feel her presence around me,” he shared. “He is a very understanding person. He was always a topper in studies, so it was never difficult raising him amid all her health battles. We also share a very close bond,” Anup added.

Anup revealed that his son is now engaged and wants to live in the US.
