A R Rahman is honoured and humbled to have got the opportunity to pay a musical tribute to legendary Carnatic vocalist, late MS Subbulakshmi, at the United Nations on India’s 70th Independence Day.
Speaking about the same, the Oscar-winning music composer told IndianExpress.com, “We all grew up with her charm. She was magic on stage. I can still remember her face. To have a character like that and to make people feel enticed through music was amazing. She was such a legend. I am honoured that 50 years after she performed at the UN, I have got the opportunity to pay tribute to her and India.”
Rahman also revealed that he had some special plans up his sleeve for the special day, which will take place at UN’s iconic General Assembly. “I have a special offering there which I will reveal very soon.” The acclaimed musician also admitted that there would be pressure on his shoulders considering that the personality he is going to pay homage to was a legend in the world of music.
Apart from Rahman’s special feat, commemorations to mark Subbulakshmi’s birth centenary will also include a photo exhibition at the UN headquarters by India’s Permanent Mission, besides the cultural extravaganza here to coincide with the country’s independence day.’
“Jai Ho to echo UN? AR Rahman to perform at UN in homage to MS Subbulakshmi on India’s 70th Independence Day,” India’s envoy to the UN Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin earlier tweeted.
“Remembering a legend. Photo exhibition @UN in memory of MS Subbulakshmi August 15-19,” he said in another tweet.
