Mammootty‘s Kannur Squad has struck gold at the box office. The police procedural, directed by Roby Varghese Raj, seems to have hit the right chord with the audience, who flocked to theatres making the film a blockbuster. Mammootty Kampany, which produced the film, took to Twitter to announce that it has collected over Rs 100 crore from across the world.
“We’re ecstatic to announce that our Kannur squad has crossed the 100 Crores milestone in terms of worldwide business! Heartfelt thanks to our amazing audience for your unwavering support, which has been the true driving force behind this historic success. Here’s to more achievements and memorable moments ahead!” read the statement.
Kannur Squad has now become the fourth highest-grossing Malayalam film. 2018, this year’s Oscar entry, is at the top of the list with a collection of Rs 200 crore. Pulimurugan and Bheeshma Parvam are in the second and third positions, respectively. Kannur Squad is also one of the highest-grossers of this year.
The movie opened to mixed reviews on September 28. Anandu Suresh of The Indian Express gave 2,5 stars to the film and wrote, “Kannur Squad is undoubtedly a solid police procedural that unfolds at a measured tempo, avoiding excessive dramatisation. However, its notable resemblances to earlier films within the same genre prevent it from being truly fresh.”
Besides Mammootty, the movie also stars Rony David Raj, Azees Nedumangad, Shabareesh Varma, Kishore, and Vijayaraghavan. The film marked the debut directorial venture of Roby Varghese Raj, a popular cinematographer known for films like Puthiya Niyamam, The Great Father, and Captain.
