Mammootty is one of the most renowned actors of the Indian film industry, and has maintained a massive level of stardom for four decades. In a new interview, Mammootty opened up about how his journey as an actor started, and recalled that he was a practicing lawyer at the time. He also remembered that his wife, Sulfath Kutty, was a “little reluctant” about him becoming an actor, but eventually got around to supporting him in his dreams.

In a chat with Khalid Al Ameri for his YouTube channel, Mammootty said that he had dreamt of becoming an actor ever since he saw his first film as a child. “I wanted to become an actor when I was 7-8 years old. So that feeling, that passion started till I got into the film industry,” he shared. He said that he studied law, and had even begun practicing when he was re-bitten by the acting bug. It was after having embarked on a conventional career, and getting married in 1979 that he eventually entered the movies as a lead hero.

“By the time I had completed my studies, I became a lawyer. I was practicing. I got married. Then only I could get into films,” he said, and mentioned that it was only after an “accidental meeting” with producer MT Vasudevan Nair that he first got a chance to lead a film. “There was an accidental meeting with MT Vasudevan Nair, and when I was talking to him, he got impressed and he got my ambitions to become an actor. Then he offered me chances. That starts history,” he said. Mammootty said that his “passion [for films] was growing” during the years he spent as a lawyer.

When asked how his wife Sulfath reacted to his decision to be in the movies, he said, “Initially, she was a little reluctant to it. But naturally, when I… She loves me. Naturally, she will love my likes also. I’m in the film industry for last 42 years, she was suffering me.” Mammootty and Sulfath Kutty got married in an arranged marriage in 1979. They have a daughter named Surumi and a son named Dulquer Salmaan, who is also a popular actor.

Mammootty has appeared in some of the finest Malayalam films in the recent years including Kaathal – The Core, Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, Bramayugam, among others.
