Lovely teaser: Thirteen years after director SS Rajamouli amazed audiences with Eega — a gripping tale of a man reincarnated as a housefly who embarks on a mission to avenge his murder while also protecting his love interest from the man who orchestrated his death — the Malayalam film industry is gearing up for a similar cinematic experiment. Like Rajamouli’s fantasy actioner, director Dileesh Karunakaran’s Lovely also revolves around a talking housefly. However, the recently released teaser suggests that this film will lean more towards humour.

The 85-second teaser opens with a young man, Boney (Mathew Thomas), asking his friend, “So, if a fly dies, it can become a ghost, right?” To give more context, he adds, “A fly spoke to me.” The teaser then cuts to a scene where the fly interacts with Boney, leaving him flabbergasted. As the teaser unfolds, it becomes clear that the story is set in a prison, with Boney as an inmate. Though he tries to question the fly about how it can communicate, she skillfully dodges his queries without offering any real answers.

At one point, the fly tells him, “I feel there’s a certain vibe between us. Some frequency matches, you know,” leaving Boney completely in awe. While those around him dismiss his claims and insist he’s losing his mind, the fly gradually becomes his closest confidante — someone he can share anything with. As the teaser progresses, glimpses of other characters are shown; so are moments from the film which hint at its comedic tone. The promo video concludes with Boney naming the fly Lovely, highlighting that she is at the heart of the story.

Also starring Unnimaya Prasad, Manoj K Jayan, Aswathy Ramachandran, Prashanth Murali, Baburaj, Joemon Jothir, Arun Pradeep, Sreejith Ravi, Jayashankar, Ashlin and Arun, Lovely has been penned by director Dileesh himself. While Aashiq Abu serves as the director of photography, the film’s music has been composed by Vishnu Vijay and Bijibal. The movie also boasts editing by Kiran Das and production design by Jothish Shankar. Lovely is set to hit screens worldwide in 3D format on April 4.
