Lokah Chapter 1 box office collection day 2: The Malayalam film Lokah is making a lot of noise online for its storyline and performances. Headlined by Kalyani Priyadarshan, Naslen and Sandy, alongside Arun Kurian and Chandu Salimkumar, the film is produced by actor Dulquer Salmaan. It blends Kerala folklore with a superhero twist. It is reportedly a start of a new cinematic universe led by female superhero, the first of its kind in Indian cinema.
With minimal publicity, the film was released across Kerala and some parts of Delhi NCR and Mumbai on August 28. With 649 shows across these regions, the film opened at Rs 2.7 crore followed by Rs 3.75 crore on day two, despite the shows being reduced to 588, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. On day two, the film witnessed an overall occupancy of 60.38% in the Malayalam language. The film has also released in the Telugu language but with limited shows.
The film is the seventh production venture of Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films. It is intended to start a Malayalam superhero cinematic universe. The screenplay was developed by the filmmaker Dominic Arun along with his Tharangam actress Santhy Balachandran.
Lokah Chapter 1 is reportedly made on a budget of Rs 30 crore. It is the 15th film of Kalyani Priyadarshan, who made her debut in 2017 with the film Hello. In eight years, she has had only two commercial failures–Marakkar and Ranarangam–making her one of the most bankable stars of her generation. Lokah Chapter 1 is her second superhero film after the 2019 film Hero. In that film, actor Siva Karthikeyan was the main lead. Naslen, on the other hand, last starred in the acclaimed film Alappuzha Gymkhana, and before that, in Premalu.
The superhero genre in Indian cinema took off recently, with films such as Brahmastra, and Kerala’s own Minnal Murali. Meanwhile, a planned reboot of the Shaktimaan character is in the works as well.
