Kishkindha Kandam OTT release date: One of the most celebrated and discussed mainstream Malayalam movies of the year, director Dinjith Ayyathan’s mystery drama Kishkindha Kandam, starring Asif Ali, Aparna Balamurali and Vijayaraghavan in the lead roles, is finally gearing up for its streaming debut after a massively successful theatrical run. Released on September 12 this year, coinciding with the Onam season, Kishkindha Kandam was produced on a reported budget of Rs 7 crore and ultimately grossed 10 times that amount at the box office. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the movie’s worldwide collection stands at Rs 75.25 crore, marking it as one of the most successful titles in Asif Ali’s career and the ninth highest-grossing Malayalam movie of 2024.
What makes Kishkindha Kandam’s success even more impressive is that, despite being set in a modest environment and telling a small, yet gripping, story with only a few characters, the movie emerged as a blockbuster at a time when monumental films such as “Thalapathy” Vijay’s action thriller The Greatest of All Time (GOAT), Tovino Thomas’ action-adventure Ajayante Randam Moshanam (ARM) and Antony Varghese’s action drama Kondal were running in theatres. Upon its release, Kishkindha Kandam garnered widespread acclaim, with particular praise directed toward its writing, direction, performances and music.
“Strange events unfold in a monkey-inhabited village, prompting a newlywed pair and forest officials to embark on a mission to uncover the root cause of the peculiar disturbances,” reads Kishkindha Kandam’s official synopsis on IMDb. Now, the movie is set for its OTT debut and will premiere 68 days after its theatrical release. On Monday, the film’s team announced on social media that Kishkindha Kandam will be available for streaming on Disney+ Hotstar starting November 19. “Lost memories. Hidden secrets. Kishkindha Kandam will keep you guessing till the end,” Disney+ Hotstar posted on Instagram along with a poster of the movie. In addition to the original Malayalam version, the film will also be available in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada languages.
In his review of the movie, The Indian Express’ Anandu Suresh wrote, “For those who may have doubted Asif Ali’s acting prowess, this film serves as a testament to his untapped potential. Aparna Balamurali, meanwhile, remains grounded in her role.”
