Dies Irae will be released in theatres worldwide on 31 October 2025, coinciding with Halloween.Dies Irae marks Pranav Mohanlal's first venture into the realm of horror.

The much-anticipated trailer of the Malayalam horror thriller Dies Irae has been released, and true to expectations, it reveals a little about the plot, yet offers a haunting glimpse into another supernatural world envisioned by acclaimed filmmaker Rahul Sadasivan. Following the critical and commercial success of Bhoothakaalam (2022) and Bramayugam (2024), Sadasivan returns to the horror genre, something which he has completely revolutionised in the last few years.

This time, the director teams up with Pranav Mohanlal, son of legendary actor Mohanlal, who steps into the horror realm for the first time. The trailer opens with a super saying: “Based on some true events.” What follows is a slow-building descent into paranoia and terror. Pranav’s character, living in an isolated house, begins experiencing unexplainable paranormal phenomena. “Would anyone believe me if I say all of these?” he asks, hinting at the psychological isolation that seems to drive the narrative.

The trailer is packed with unsettling visuals: invisible forces dragging the protagonist by the collar, doors slamming shut on their own, lights flickering and bursting, and a relentless sense of dread dominating every frame. One particularly chilling sequence shows Pranav being mercilessly pulled down a flight of stairs by an unseen entity. Hints of a generational curse emerge as the trailer suggests that Pranav’s character may be the latest in his family to suffer the consequences of an ancient affliction, making him the target of these supernatural forces.

The trailer ends with a suspenseful mage: Pranav’s character staring at his reflection in the mirror, his eyes heavy with suspicion, his appearance altered, as if marked by the very evil that haunts him. Dies Irae also reunites the core creative team behind Bramayugam, cinematographer Shehnad Jalal, production designer Jothish Shankar, editor Shafique Mohamed Ali, and composer Christo Xavier. All of whom contributed significantly to the atmosphere and storytelling in Sadasivan’s previous outing.

The film’s title, Dies Irae, Latin for “Day of Wrath”, is taken from a medieval hymn associated with judgment and mortality, suggesting deeper philosophical undercurrents beneath its horror surface. Scheduled for release on October 31, Dies Irae is set to deliver a chilling cinematic experience just in time for Halloween.
