After Vala release, actor Dhyan Sreenivasan embraces father’s agricultural legacy, set to cultivate rice on 80 acres

After making his film debut in Thira (2013), the third directorial venture of his brother — actor, filmmaker and playback singer Vineeth Sreenivasan — Dhyan has appeared in dozens of films over the years.

Already known in real life as the clone of his father and legendary actor-filmmaker Sreenivasan — with an innate knack for spontaneous humour and sharp sarcasm — actor-director Dhyan Sreenivasan has now followed in the former’s footsteps into a new domain after making his mark in cinema.

In a “like father, like son” endeavour, Dhyan has taken up farming, embracing the agricultural legacy of Sreenivasan. Living close to the Kandanad-Punachal paddy fields in Udayamperoor, Ernakulam district, Dhyan and his family are at the forefront of rice cultivation this year.

For the past few years, the Kandanad paddy fields, which Sreenivasan had been cultivating, have frequently made headlines due to the numerous agricultural activities taking place there. Dhyan has inherited his father’s passion for farming now, and this year, he is collaborating with the Kandanad Padasekhara Samithi (Paddy Collective) to cultivate rice on 80 acres of land.

Dhyan has taken the land on lease in partnership with locals Manu Philip and Saju Kurian. Recently, over 1,500 kg of seeds were brought to the Kandanad fields. While Uma seeds are primarily being sown this time, native seeds will also be planted in five acres. The collective members are currently in the final stages of ploughing the fields.

It is the two-acre cultivation started by Sreenivasan years ago that has now expanded to 80 acres. The fallow lands in Kandanad were revived by the collective under the leadership of the veteran actor-filmmaker. Kandanad, located just 15 km from Kochi, is known as an agricultural hub where paddy cultivation, vegetable farming, and intermittent sunflower cultivation are often carried out by local farmers.

A vithu mahotsavam (seed sowing festival) will be held here at 10 am on Tuesday, which will be inaugurated by Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden, Mathrubhumi reported. Both Dhyan and his father, Sreenivasan, will be present at the occasion.

After making his film debut in Thira (2013), the third directorial venture of his brother — actor, filmmaker and playback singer Vineeth Sreenivasan — Dhyan has appeared in dozens of films over the years. He was most recently seen in Vala: Story of a Bangle.
