Days after producer and Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) president G Suresh Kumar claimed that many theatres in Kerala were struggling to stay afloat due to poor footfall, the Malayalam film 2018 – Everyone Is A Hero, based on the catastrophic flood that rocked Kerala five years ago, has had an amazing opening weekend.

According to film trade analysts and industry trackers, 2018 raked in Rs 4.01 crore on Sunday and thus took the movie’s total collection to Rs 9.17 crore within three days.

It is reported that the film is receiving a warm response in Tamil Nadu as well. Multiplexes in Chennai have started adding more shows of the movie, hours after the Tamil Nadu Multiplex Association on Sunday announced their decision to stop screening director Sudipto Sen’s controversial film The Kerala Story in the state.

Depending on the availability of screens, 2018’s dubbed Tamil version will hit screens on May 12 or 19, entertainment industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai tweeted on Monday.

According to experts, 2018 is turning out to be a mega theatrical blockbuster in Kerala and has been receiving a welcome that no other Malayalam film got in recent times, despite releasing soon after Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 2 and Akhil Sathyan’s Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum.

Kavitha Theatre in Ernakulam, Kerala’s biggest cinema hall, sold 13,671 tickets of 2018 in the past three days and minted a massive Rs 18.14 lakh, industry expert AB George tweeted.

The Jude Anthany Joseph directorial is likely to emerge as the second Malayalam film to have a good theatrical run this year. Till now, only Romancham (Dir. Jithu Madhavan) has had a good theatrical run and ended up collecting over Rs 70 crore worldwide.
