Actor Lee Jung-jae, best known for his work in Netflix’s Squid Game, is one of the most popular Korean actors in the world. Recently, a female fan of the actor was scammed for 500 million KWR (Rs 3 crore) using his AI images as the scammers pretended to be the Korean star.
Reports suggest that the scammers played the long game as they started scamming the woman by asking for a smaller amount. The scammers first reached out to the woman via social media, where they pretended to be the Squid Game actor. The contact was initiated under the false pretence of fan interaction, and the victim got roped in after the scammers used fake images and an identity card to convince her of the fake identity. The perpetrators even sent fake images from the set of Squid Game to convince her.

They started building a rapport with her and eventually gained her confidence as they asked her to transfer 6 million KWR (Rs 3.6 lakh) in exchange for an in-person meeting with the actor. The scam went on and they ultimately managed to extract 500 million KWR (Rs 3 crore) from the fan.
Earlier this year, something similar happened in Hollywood when a French woman was duped out of 850,000 euros (Rs 7.5 crore). Over the course of two years, she was made to believe that she was in contact with actor Brad Pitt and his mother, Etta Pitt. The woman believed that she was in a romantic relationship with Brad. At the same time, the victim was, in fact, going through a divorce with her millionaire husband. Apart from several tiny requests for money, the scammers told the woman that Brad was in need of funds for a kidney operation, and they claimed that his own account had been frozen due to his divorce with Angelina Jolie.
Lee Jung-jae was last seen in the latest season of Squid Game and will next be seen in Nice Not To Meet You, where he will be playing a fading actor chasing his glory days. The show will release on November 3.
