Apart from making some of the most revered films of the last 5 decades, director Ridley Scott is also known for speaking his mind. During a recent event, Ridley gave his two cents on the state of modern filmmaking and how he stays away from it all.

While addressing people at the British Film Institute, the director didn’t hold back when talking about the films of today and said, “The quantity of movies that are made today, literally globally—millions. Not thousands, millions … and most of it is sh**. I think a lot of films today are saved and made more expensive by digital effects, because what they haven’t got is a great thing on paper first. Get it on paper. I think occasionally a good one will happen, [and] it’s like a relief that there’s somebody out there who’s doing a good movie.”

He added, “Well, actually, right now, I’m finding mediocrity—we’re drowning in mediocrity. And so what I do—it’s a horrible thing—is I’ve started watching my own movies, and actually they’re pretty good! And also, they don’t age.” The director revealed that he recently rewatched his film Black Hawk Down and wondered, “How in the hell did I manage to do that?”

Ridley Scott’s latest film Gladiator II, the sequel to one of his greatest films, Gladiator, did not exactly make the same kind of impact its predecessor did. The film did incredibly at the box office, but most reviews said that it leaves something to be desired. He has already confirmed that he is working on the third film of the franchise.

Scott has also finished the production for his next film, The Dog Stars, starring Jacob Elordi.
