It was expected that SS Rajamouli's RRR would be selected as India's contender for the Oscars but it was the Gujarati film Chhello Show that was selected by the Film Federation of India. Rajamouli, in an earlier chat with The Hollywood Reporter, said that he was "disappointed" when his film was not selected by the FFI. "Yeah, it is disappointing. But we are not the kind of people who would sit and brood about why it didn’t happen. What has happened has happened, and we should go forward with it," he said.
Rajamouli did not speak about the reason as to why RRR was not chosen but mentioned that his film had a "bigger chance." He added, "Of course, everyone knew RRR had a much bigger chance. Here (in the US) everyone felt RRR had a bigger chance. But I don’t know how the committee (Film Federation of India), what are guidelines for the committee. I don’t know that and I can’t comment on that."
Chandrabose’s wife Suchitra told PTI, "I am very happy that Chandrabose and (music director) Keeravaani ji have won the Oscar award for India. I am just waiting for my husband to return (to celebrate). I will welcome him with lot of flowers."
Union Home Minister Amit Shah heaped praise on the song Naatu Naatu and congratulated the entire team. He wrote on Twitter, "A landmark day for Indian cinema, as the 'Naatu Naatu' song creates history by winning the Oscar Award.
