There are still a few months left in the year and fans of the motion pictures are sure to get their fix of monsters and aliens. The new addition to this year’s collection of films to look forward to is the Yorgos Lanthimos directorial Bugonia, which according to its trailer has more than a few quirks ups its sleeve.
The movie stars Emma Stone in the role of a strong independent and successful corporate executive, who is unfortunately kidnapped by two men obsessed with conspiracy theories. The reason behind the abduction is not your regular, ‘we demand a ransom,’ and they aren’t asking her to sign over her assets. For some reason, they think that their boss is not human, and is an alien from outer space, hell bent on destroying the Earth.
The trailer does leave a lot to the viewer’s imagination as the two kidnappers try to get a confession from Michelle (Emma Stone) and she clearly doesn’t understand the root cause behind their doubts. She struggles until the point of giving up and telling them that she is an alien, but the kidnappers don’t believe her unconvincing tone. The chaotic camera angles, the colour grading of the shots, and the trouble these kidnappers seems to get in, suggest that their plan to get the confession from Michelle goes south in some way or the other. It’s their belief against the protagonist’s truth, or at least what she wants them to think the truth is. She even exclaims, “The truth, lies, what’s the difference?”
Bugonia also stars Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Vanessa Eng, Cedric Dumornay, and Alicia Silverstone.
