Despite Greta Gerwig’s fantasy comedy Barbie being the undisputed champion in the global ‘Barbenheimer’ battle, the film’s box office earnings in India paint a completely different picture.
Though the film received a promising start in its opening weekend in India, Barbie’s numbers declined as the week began. On Tuesday, which marked Barbie’s fifth day in theatres, the early estimates from industry tracker Sacnilk revealed that the film earned only Rs 2.30 crore. While this figure remained the same as Monday’s earnings, it is evident that the film’s performance during the two weekdays has been significantly lacklustre compared to its impressive Rs 7.15 crore collection in India on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer sustained its successful run by recording an India nett of Rs 6.25 crore on Tuesday, following a remarkable Rs 7 crore on Monday, Sacnilk reported.
However, by cracking the top 15 Mondays of all time without the help of a holiday weekend, Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the lead roles, has managed to generate $188 million (at the North American box office) to date and will cross the $200 million mark today, Variety reported. The Greta Gerwig film has so far amassed $194.3 million at the international box office, bringing its global total to $382 million.
On Monday, the film added $26 million to its kitty, resulting in the best Monday gross in Warner Bros’ history, Variety noted. Barbie had eked out $162 million in its first weekend, marking the biggest debut ever for a film directed by a woman, overtaking Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s 2019 superhero film Captain Marvel ($153 million).
Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has achieved total earnings of $209 million, with $95 million from domestic box office collections and $114 million from international markets, as per figures listed by Box Office Mojo.
In her review of the film, The Indian Express’ Shalini Langer noted that the film has “no place” for “uncomfortable questions”. “You can’t shake off the feeling of the overarching Mattel influence on the film, in raising questions about Barbie and what it means or doesn’t for real women, but ensuring that the most uncomfortable ones land as feeble jokes or are kept to the background,” she mentioned.
