Ayo Edebiri recently took to her Instagram Stories to slam Elon Musk for spreading fake news that she says opened the floodgates to death threats and racial slurs. The incident dates back to February, when Musk shared a bogus claim on X that Disney was replacing Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 with Edebiri. Not only did he rage against the casting (which wasn’t real to begin with), but he also took a swipe at Disney, writing, “Disney sucks.”
Now, months after the post that left Pirates fans furious, Edebiri is speaking out. “Just remembering when I got some of the most insane death threats and racial slurs of my life (idk if it’s the #1 moment, but for sure top 3) for a fake reboot of a movie I had never even heard of because of this man,” she wrote alongside Musk’s original post. The Emmy-winning star went on to call Musk a “double Sieg Heil-ing fascist” before adding, “And he’s an idiot, but anyway.”
For context, Johnny Depp previously said he walked away from the sixth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, citing damage done to his reputation during his highly publicized legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard.
Before going in on the Tesla and SpaceX chief, Ayo Edebiri gave a shoutout to comedian Bill Burr, who recently roasted Elon Musk during an interview on NPR’s Fresh Air. Burr didn’t mince words either, calling Musk “evidently a Nazi” in reference to the controversial hand gestures Musk made during Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration back in January. Burr said, “I just refuse to believe it was an accidental two-time Sieg Heil. And he does it at a presidential inauguration!”
In 2019, Disney announced its plan to start working on the sixth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean. However, at the time, production didn’t announce the cast and didn’t confirm whether Johnny Depp, who famously led the first five films, would return as the lead in the reboot. Still, fans assumed the obvious.
But things took a turn in 2022 when Depp’s infamous defamation trial against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, ended up badly hurting his reputation, despite him walking out of court victorious. Later, the actor confirmed he had been dropped from Pirates 6.
During the trial, Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer told The Times that, “at the moment, Disney wasn’t planning to bring Depp back on board as Captain Jack Sparrow.” However, he did add, “The future is yet to be decided.” As of now, there’s still no update on whether Disney has changed its stance.
