Actor Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and his wife, fellow actor Rasika Agashe, recently spoke about moving to Mumbai with only Rs 40,000 to their name, and how they survived in the City of Dreams with barely any money for the first few years. In a follow-up to the same interview, Rasika spoke about the first time that she understood when her and Zeeshan’s religious identity doesn’t afford them the same privileges in life.
In an interaction with Siddharth Kannan, Rasika said that she has more freedom to speak her mind than her husband. Rasika attracted attention when she tweeted about life as an inter-faith couple some years ago, in response to an advertisement about inclusivity that was taken down following backlash.
Reflecting on that time, she said, “I posted that tweet and didn’t think much about it, social media was still a new thing for me. Some time later, Zeeshan asked me what I had done. My phone’s battery had died, so he asked me to charge it and see all the trolling that was happening. ‘Oh, so this is what trolling is,’ I remember saying.”
She continued, “I always tell him, I’m a part of the majority in this country, and I do a lot without thinking much about it. And I wish he could do this as well. Being a part of the majority, you feel bad that the minority has to consider everything so carefully. My name is Rasika Agashe, people will think twice before trolling me. Minorities should also be able to feel this way. You feel bad about it. I realised that Zeeshan is a part of the minority after I married him. As someone who belongs to the majority, there are so many things you are clueless about.”
Rasika said that what matters the most is having a clear conscience, and personally, for her, she wants to be able to have a satisfactory answer for her daughter if she’s ever asked what she was doing when the world was burning. Rasika and Zeeshan got married in 2007, and they have two children.
