Yesteryear actor Zeenat Aman on Tuesday took to Instagram to take fans down memory lane. Sharing a still from the song “Chanchal Sheetal Nirmal Komal”, the actor mentioned how when the sequence was narrated to her by Raj Kapoor, she ‘burst into a flood of tears’.
In the photo with Shashi Kapoor, Zeenat looked stunning in a red skirt with an off-shoulder top. She also adorned traditional gold jewellery in the picture. Giving insights into the ‘psychedelic trip’ song, she wrote, “Giant mushrooms, pink clouds, bellowing smoke, enormous flowers, sexy outfits, otherworldly props…this fantasy song sequence from Satyam Shivam Sundaram went the whole nine yards. I’d go as far as to call it something of a psychedelic trip!”
The actor added that very few people know about the drama that went behind the scenes. Calling her director Raj Kapoor an ‘aesthete to the core’, she shared how he was known for working with some of the most beautiful performers from the south. “…the likes of Vyjayanthimala and Padmini. He also had a taste for classical dance, and had conceptualised this entire song with that in mind,” she wrote.
Zeenat Aman further shared that it was her first film under the RK banner and as she was not a classical dancer, the song left her nervous. She recalled, “When Rajji narrated the sequence to me, I burst into a flood of tears! I was convinced I would make a fool of myself and sink the entire film. Through hiccups and sobs I explained my predicament to him. Rajji laughed. “What will I do with you convent girls and your two left feet?” he exclaimed.
Zeenat noted that the filmmaker did help her out, as he instructed the legendary choreographer Sohanlal to teach her mudras and not use any ‘complicated choreography’. She added, “Simultaneously, genius costume designer Bhanu Athaiya created a range of sensational outfits, and art director A. Rangaraj mounted a stunning set. And thus, the SSS team created a wonderland.”
The actor asked her followers to find the video on YouTube and give it a watch. “It’s a visual delight, and I would love to hear your thoughts on it.”
