Actor Zayed Khan had a lot of fun shooting for the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Main Hoon Na– but it wasn’t without getting yelled at, abused and even have a pair of slippers thrown at him by filmmaker Farah Khan on the film’s set. As the action-comedy entertainer clocked 19 years of its release on Sunday, Zayed recalled memories of shooting the film.
Directed by Farah, Main Hoon Na starred Sushmita Sen, Sunil Shetty, Amrita Rao and followed the story of an Army Major, sent on a undercover mission as a university student to protect a general’s daughter from a rogue soldier. The film featured Zayed as Laxman, brother of Shah Rukh.
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Zayed was asked how difficult was it to shoot the film’s popular one-take song Chale Jaise Hawayein. The actor said he had a tough time filming the song and had also angered Farah during its making.
“This was a time when we were shooting on 400 feet of film and not on digital. So it was not like ‘Jitne bhi takes chahiye, le lo’! There was a discipline on set. Also, we were on a high attitude. After giving one take, haalat kharab ho jaati thi. I remember, during the shoot, the camera captured Amrita Rao and was coming towards me. Everyone around me was like ‘Be ready, be ready, be ready’. The dancers had done it too many times. Anyway, the camera panned towards me and one of the dancers next to me fell down.
“He got a fit as he was so exhausted. I didn’t know what to do. I started performing but then I realized I’d have to dance over this chap. I thought, ‘This cannot be my introduction’!”
Because he was caught in a fix, Zayed said he didn’t know what else to do so he said “Cut”, much to the annoyance of Farah, who was making her debut with the film.
“Farah got so angry. She abused the hell out of me and also threw her chappal on me! I told her, ‘How do you expect me to dance over somebody who is dying, man’! She thundered, ‘You can’t say Cut on my bloody set. I’ll say Cut’. Finally, the unit members realize that the poor guy is lying down. He was rescued. Then we did it again and it went on very smoothly,” he added.
Main Hoon Na marked the first film to be produced and distributed by Red Chillies Entertainment. Post the film, Shah Rukh and Farah collaborated for projects like Om Shanti Om and Happy New Year.
